Les liens de l’Argentine avec les terres antarctiques remontent au début du XXe siècle, lorsque du personnel argentin a participé à l’expédition Nordenskjold (1901-1903), à la suite de laquelle la première station météorologique a été établie dans les îles Orcades du Sud, qui n’a jamais cessé de fonctionner depuis lors. À partir de 1951, avec la création de l’Institut argentin de l’Antarctique, un plan d’occupation systématique a été organisé à travers des campagnes réalisées chaque été et l’installation d’une série de stations scientifiques et de bases militaires et navales. L’Antarctique argentin repose sur des droits de proximité et d’occupation continue et ininterrompue depuis 1904.
