El príncipe que quería Maquiavelo para Italia debía seguir un comportamiento estricto para gobernar al interior: la norma de la justicia y la moral. Mientras que para las estrategias exteriores requería de hacer todo lo necesario y preciso para la salvación de la patria. En la época moderna, cuando se han reproducido aspiraciones políticas semejantes a las existentes en la época de Maquiavelo, las doctrinas de éste han encontrado cobijo por parte de los defensores convencidos de que el despotismo es el camino adecuado.
