Las doce contribuciones que integran el libro, escritas por un equipo de reconocidos expertos internacionales en la materia, plantea un ambicioso recorrido que tiene la virtud de cubrir gran parte del arco temporal que abarcó la caza de brujas europea, desde los entusiasmos iniciales de los siglos XIV y XV hasta las tardías polémicas de finales del siglo XVII. En efecto, el recorrido se inicia en la década de 1320 con la bula 'Super illius specula' de Juan XXII y culmina en la década de 1690, con 'De Betoverde Weereld' de Balthasar Bekker.Este trayecto tiene poco de casual. No cabe atribuir al azar el hecho de que el punto de partida del itinerario sea la curia pontificia, por entonces asentada en la cálida sede provenzal de Aviñón, ni que el punto de llegada sea la marítima y fría Ámsterdam, trinchera de la libertad de consciencia en vísperas del Siglo de las Luces. Entre estos dos extremos cronológicos, que encierran la fase de apogeo de la demonología radical y de la caza de brujas europea, Satán desplegó una panoplia infinita de rostros, máscaras y semblantes, propios de su naturaleza angélica proteiforme. Ésta, capaz de adoptar cualquier disfraz o apariencia, se mantuvo omnipresente como dispositivo cultural diseñado para otorgar sentido al angustiante universo de los hombres y mujeres del Medioevo tardío y de la Modernidad temprana.Escriben: Michael D.
