La première difficulté inhérente à notre propos tient à ce que, depuis ces cent cinquante dernières années, le terme 'juif' a pris dans l’usage courant deux sens très différents. Pour mieux comprendre cette nouveauté, reportons-nous par l’imagination en l’an 1780. À l’époque, la signification de ce terme pour tout le monde coïncidait avec ce que les juifs eux-mêmes considéraient comme le fondement constitutif de leur propre identité. Celle-ci était essentiellement religieuse ; de plus, les préceptes de la religion régissaient, jusque dans les moindres détails quotidiens, tous les aspect de la vie sociale et privée des juifs entre eux et dans leurs rapports avec les non-juifs. Qu’un juif pût boire ne fût-ce qu’un verre d’eau chez un non-juif était alors effectivement impensable. Cette situation a été modifiée par un double processus, lequel, né en Hollande et en Angleterre, s’est poursuivi en France, lors de la Révolution, ainsi que dans les pays qui suivirent son exemple, et a fini par gagner les États monarchiques modernes du XIXe siècle : dans tous ces pays, les juifs ont acquis des droits individuels nombreux et importants (et, dans certains cas, l’égalité juridique complète) ; et le pouvoir judiciaire que la communauté juive exerçait sur ses membres a été aboli. Notons bien que ces deux développements furent simultanés et que le second - bien qu’assez peu connu - est encore plus important que le premier.
