Fin dagli albori della civiltà, la storia è sempre stata permeata da numerosi conflitti, paradossi e incoerenze, ma anche da conquiste e progressi significativi. Ciò significa che la società internazionale ha subito diverse trasformazioni che ne hanno profondamente modificato i contorni, rendendola più complessa e meno centrata sulla figura degli Stati sovrani. In questo contesto, dalla società internazionale moderna a quella contemporanea, l’umanità ha assistito a continue minacce alla pace mondiale e a brutali violazioni dei diritti umani, innescate dall’irrazionalità dei conflitti armati. In particolare, dopo la Seconda guerra mondiale, il mantenimento della pace e della sicurezza internazionale è emerso come una necessità vitale di fronte all’avanzare del fenomeno della globalizzazione economica. Ciò ha portato a un passaggio dal vecchio sistema anarchico westfaliano a un insieme internazionale di accordi biforcati basati su una società multicentrica e interdipendente. Ciò ha portato all’emergere di nuovi attori internazionali, più dinamici e integrati in un progetto comune di pacificazione mondiale, tra cui spicca il ruolo svolto dall’Organizzazione delle Nazioni Unite (ONU).
