Uno dei principali problemi ambientali del Brasile è la mancanza di servizi igienici di base, in particolare la mancanza di smaltimento delle acque reflue. Questo porta alla contaminazione dell’acqua e causa gravi problemi di salute pubblica. Solo il 57,6% dei comuni brasiliani dispone di un sistema di raccolta delle acque reflue. Il presente lavoro analizza i sistemi fognari utilizzati in una microregione del bacino del fiume Várzea e il loro impatto sulla qualità dell’acqua utilizzata per l’approvvigionamento umano in questa regione.
