Describe esta obra el viaje de un aristócrata mozárabe quien, tras ser conquistada Toledo por Alfonso VI, se piensa un perseguido político. De Toledo hasta su refugio en Zaragoza, la novela describe nueve días de viaje evocador durante los que el protagonista rememora los acontecimientos, tanto personales como políticos, que le condujeron a tal destierro. Iuva está preocupado y condicionado por lo que él considera el derrumbamiento de su cultura y costumbres; decepcionado por el rumbo que toma su mundo. Sus recuerdos abarcan desde el acceso al poder de Al-mamún, en 1043, hasta la rendición de Toledo de 1085: acontecimientos como los del Reino de León y las taifas de Toledo, Sevilla, Córdoba, Zaragoza y Badajoz a los que añade sus propias reflexiones. Finalmente, complementa estos pensamientos con los motivos que para él justificaron la caída del califato y que, en definitiva, condujeron al Imperio Andalusí a su desmembración. Una obra veraz, basada en personajes y sucesos históricos reales, que puede leerse como el relato ameno del viaje a través de un país musulmán o bien como un texto histórico verosímil que recoge acontecimientos singulares de un pasado no tan lejano.
