A Organização das Nações Unidas para a Alimentação e a Agricultura prevê que o mundo necessitará de mais 70% de alimentos até 2050 devido ao aumento da população, à diminuição das terras agrícolas e à limitação dos recursos naturais. A escassez de recursos naturais, incluindo água doce e terras aráveis, juntamente com o declínio dos rendimentos dos principais produtos de base, agravou a questão. Além disso, o trabalho agrícola na maioria dos países diminuiu. Com uma força de trabalho agrícola cada vez menor, os agricultores estão a implementar opções de conetividade à Internet para reduzir o trabalho manual. As soluções IoT centram-se no nosso objetivo de ajudar os agricultores a obter elevados rendimentos, rentabilidade e preservação ambiental, colmatando a lacuna entre a oferta e a procura. A agricultura de precisão refere-se à utilização de tecnologias IoT para otimizar a atribuição de recursos, aumentar o rendimento das colheitas e reduzir os custos. A tecnologia IoT na agricultura inclui equipamento especializado, redes sem fios, software e serviços de TI. De acordo com um inquérito da BI Intelligence, prevê-se que a penetração dos dispositivos IoT na agricultura atinja 75 milhões até 2020, com uma taxa de crescimento anual de 20%.
