The Gods Are Athirst is a novel written by Anatole France, originally published in French in 1912. The story takes place during the French Revolution and follows the journey of a young artist named variste Gamelin. variste is a fervent supporter of the revolution and becomes a member of the Revolutionary Tribunal, where he is tasked with condemning those who are deemed enemies of the revolution. As variste becomes more powerful, he becomes increasingly ruthless and begins to lose sight of his original ideals. He becomes obsessed with power and begins to see himself as a god-like figure, which leads him to commit heinous acts in the name of the revolution. However, as the revolution progresses and the Reign of Terror begins, variste begins to question his actions and the true nature of the revolution.Throughout the novel, France explores the themes of power, corruption, and the dangers of fanaticism. The title of the book, The Gods Are Athirst, refers to the idea that the French people, in their fervor for revolution, have created a new set of gods to worship, which ultimately leads to their downfall. The Gods Are Athirst is a thought-provoking and powerful novel that provides a unique perspective on the French Revolution and the dangers of extremism. It is considered one of Anatole France’s most important works and has been widely studied and praised for its insightful commentary on human nature and society.1923.
