A finales del año 1742 dos barcos parten de Cádiz con la intención de realizar un «viaje redondo», es decir, una travesía de ida y vuelta que, en este caso, los llevará desde el puerto gaditano hasta el de Veracruz (México), como punto geográfico más alejado, antes de efectuar el regreso. Sin embargo, dichos navíos, por su diferente naturaleza, uno civil y el otro militar, tienen la intención de realizar misiones bien distintas. Entre 1739 y 1748 se estaba librando en el Caribe una guerra entre Gran Bretaña y España; la Guerra de la Oreja de Jenkins, en el marco de la Guerra de Sucesión al trono austriaco. Dicho conflicto causa el cese del viejo sistema de flotas de la Carrera de Indias, sustituido por la concesión de licencias para navío suelto a través de la Casa de Contratación. El Imperio Español tiene ahora, más que nunca, la necesidad de mantener abiertas sus rutas comerciales con el Nuevo Mundo frente a los ingleses, mientras trata de traer a la península los caudales procedentes de América. Historia, amor, comercio y guerra; todo se entrecruza en esta novela trepidante.
